I'm starting to hate the words 'Realistic' and 'Normal'

I'm starting to hate the words 'Realistic' and 'Normal' especially in book reviews( and not just in my book reviews). What makes a story Believable? The fact that you can or cannot see it happen? That would imply that you are everywhere and knew everybody.
What's really going on in your neighbors house? How would you know if you only lived in your house? your block? your neighborhood? your small corner of the world?
What do people say about you when you are out of their presence? You don't know because you are not there.
How would you know if you weren't there or you just read about it?
Oh let's not forget the almighty 'Far-fetched'. People would be surprised by what they don't see or know. The truth is most people only go by what they can see or fathom. If it is remotely out of the reach of plausiblity then it didn't happen or could have. right? Not!
That is what is wrong with the world now. Seeing is not always believing. It can happen without you knowing about or believing.
As a person who reads and writes books. I don't write the norm because nothing is normal. Only what YOU see is normal. Somebody else's normal is totally different. What if that author was afraid to wright an autobiographical account of things for fear of retaliation. How do you know that you are not getting the 'lite' version of a small piece of someones life. You don't!
Judging a book, page, scene, chapter on believability may set you up to miss that very thing going on in someone you know's life.
Do you really know if that last book you read was true or not or if it was all a lie. Simply putting fiction on don't qualify it as that it just covers up some hidden truths.
So....Readers, Reviewers, Realist(ugh), Authors, Writers, Poets, People.
What is really real, normal, or far-fetched?
The truth is you may never know your neighbors' real or normal, becasue most of the time you are doing you.
Just something to think about.
Blanket statements:
No one would be that stupid right? What is everybody born smart with everything well put together like you?
That could never happen. So you have seen everything?
That has never happened. yeah okay! you keep believing that.
to be continued.....

  1. I agree and that's why I am drawn to books that are outside of my norm. They help me think outside of the box and subject me to the unknown which may very well be someone else's norm.
